  Amber Palace
City: Jaipur    State: Rajasthan    Country: India

Located about 11 km from Jaipur, on Delhi-Jaipur Highway, this was the ancient citadel of the Kachwahas of Amber, before the capital, was shifted to its present place, Jaipur. The name of the place is pronounced as ‘Amer’. This palace too is a beautiful mix of Hindu and Mughal architecture and is situated on amazing rugged hills. It was built by Raja Man Singh I in 1592 and was completed by Mirza Raja Jai Singh. Built in red sand stone and marble, the palace has a classic and romantic aura. The interior walls of the fort-palace have been adorned with lively paintings in carved settings, studded with precious stones and mirrors. The Maota Lake in the foreground is amazing. The walls of the fort-palace are very thick and sturdy built for the protection of its residents.

Kali or Shila Devi Temple, with its silver lions and silver doors, is a pleasant place to see. ‘Diwan-e-aam’ is a pavilion with two rows of columns. Ganesh Pol or the Lord Ganesh Gate leads to the inhabited chambers of the King. Jai Mandir, or the Hall of Victory, has an amazing ceiling with mirror work. Several other halls enhance the glory of this fort, and above all, the royal elephant ride will make you enjoy it even more.

Originally the palace was a small structure owned by Meena tribes; the Rajputs won it and gave it today’s grand look. It has all the necessities as well as luxuries needed for the royal families. It has a history as old as of 7 centuries, which shows in its atmosphere. While many of the earlier structures were destroyed, some structures, dating back to the 16th century onwards have been well preserved with sincere efforts.

  Govind Dev Ji Temple
City: Jaipur    State: Rajasthan    Country: India

This temple standing between the Chandra Mahal and the Badal Mahal of the City Palace Complex was built by Raja Man Singh in 1890. It is devoted to Govind Dev Ji, i.e. Lord Krishna. He is the ruling deity of Amber’s Kachawaha Dynasty. Originally the idol was in the Vrindavan Temple of Uttar Pradesh, another state of Indian Republic. The legend is, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh had a dream in which the Lord told him to bring Himself to Jaipur, which was done by the king. After the death of the king, among the many successors, Raja Man Singh built the temple in 1890.

On seven different timings of the day, the idols of Lord Krishna and Goddess Radha are prayed with Aartis (Prayers) and Bhog (Food for God), and they are adorned with different clothes each time. The festival of Janmashtami, i.e. the birthday of the Lord is celebrated with full passion and thousands of devotees come for the ‘Darshan’ (View) of the Lord.

  Birla Mandir
City: Jaipur    State: Rajasthan    Country: India

This beautiful temple, in the south of Jaipur, located just below the famous Moti Dungri Fort, is built is 1988 by B.M. Birla Foundation. Devoted to Lord Lakshmi Narayan, this temple is built in pure white marble, which is the peculiarity of the Birla Mandirs (temples built by the Birla Group of Industries, one of the business tycoons of India). The temple looks even more glorious at night, when it is fully lit. As it is devoted to Lord Vishnu, i.e. Narayan and Goddess Lakshmi, His wife, the temple is also known as Lakshmi Narayan Temple. The idols of both are peculiarly made of one single piece of marble. The idol of Lord Ganesh is outstanding and is almost-transparent. The stained glass windows are depicting scenes from Hindu mythology. Both the exteriors and interiors of the temple are carved beautifully to depict various mythological events. A lush green garden surrounds the temple, which too is a peculiarity of a Birla Mandir.

  City Palace
City: Jaipur    State: Rajasthan    Country: India

The palace situated in the heart of the city, is an ideal example of the foresightedness of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh. Its architecture shows a blend of Rajput and Mughal styles. A part of the palace is still resided by the ex-royal family. Mubarak Mahal is the first structure we come across after entering the complex of the Palace. It is the reception spot of the palace. Built by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh in the 19th century, now the building houses the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh II Museum, and displays a wide range of royal costumes, some very precious and exqisite Pashmina (of Kashmir) shawls, Sanganeri prints and folk embroidery. The display of the billowing costumes of Maharaja Sawai Man Singh I is the most unusual.

Next, through an elegant gateway, we enter the ‘Diwan-e-khaas’, i.e. the court for the selected audience. Two magnificent silver vessels are displayed here, which are world’s largest silver vessels. They carried the water of River Ganga for Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II when he went to England. The ‘Diwan-e-aam’, i.e. the court for the common public, is another tourist attraction, it has a beautifully painted ceiling, and it displays rare ancient genuine manuscripts of Hindu scriptures.

Next is the Maharani’s (Queen’s) Palace, which displays the Rajput weaponry. This vast collection contains weapons dating back to 15th century, and still in good condition. The most remarkable is scissor-like dagger, which when pierced into the body, its blades are spread tearing the body fatally. Chain amours, swords with jeweled and ivory handles, pistols, belt swords, guns, small, assorted cannons, poison-tipped blades and gun powder pouches too have been displayed, the variety of which will certainly astound you. The ceiling frescos are wonderful and in good condition.

The best part of the City Palace complex, perhaps, is the Chandra Mahal, which is a seven-storied palace, the topmost of which is called the Mukut Mahal. The splendid architecture of this Palace with fine paintings and walls with mirror work and floral decoration is worth-seeing. Opposite Chandra Mahal, there is Badal Mahal, and the Govind Dev Ji Temple falls between the two.

  Nahargarh Fort
City: Jaipur    State: Rajasthan    Country: India

This fort offers a wonderful northern backdrop to Jaipur, as it stands on rocky ridge of Aravalli Hills, 6 km from Jaipur. Presenting a stunning view at night when floodlit, it overlooks the city. It was built in 1734 and expanded in 1868. Maharaja Jai Singh built it to strengthen the defense of Amber, and its name, Nahargarh, means ‘Home of Tigers’. The legend says that it was named after Nahar Singh, a prince, whose spirit was disturbing the construction process of the fort, and only stopped doing so when it was agreed that the fort would be named after him.

The Madhavendra Bhawan, constructed by Sawai Madho Singh, is a wonderful group of 12 identical chambers for queens and at the main spot, there is a chamber for the King himself. These chambers are linked with each other by corridors. Some delicate frescos, as well as toilets and kitchen hearths are still preserved. The structure served as a resort for the royal family in summers and it is a favorite picnic spot even today.

This is the most splendid fort of the three-hilltop forts. It was built between the 15th and the 18th century, 15 km from Jaipur, 400 feet above the Amber Fort, amidst the rugged hills, known as ‘Cheel ka Teela’ or ‘Hill of Eageles’, and does not show any delicate adornment like the other forts. During the Mughal reign, Jaipur was the main weapon-producing city for the Rajputs and Mughals, and many weapons are on display in the fort’s museum, like swords, guns, shields, muskets and also a 50 kg cannon ball. It is one of the few military camps of the medieval India, but still almost intact, and consists of palaces, granary, a well-built cannon foundry, several temples, a high tower, and a gigantic cannon, the Jai Ban (Jaivan), which is the largest cannon in the world, mounted on wheels. There is a steep road to approach the main gate of the fortress, the Dungar Darwaza, which offers an inspiring view.

  Hawa Mahal (Wind Palace)
City: Jaipur    State: Rajasthan    Country: India

Next to the City Palace, stands the world-famous Hawa Mahal, built by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799. It is a splendid 5-storied structure built in pink sandstone and has 953 windows, or ‘jharokhas’ adorned with beautiful lattice work. The wind circulation through these windows are excellent and keeps the palace always cool, and hence the name Hawa Mahal or the Wind Palace has been given to it. Small screened balconies, arched roofs, the pyramidal outline and replication of pattern makes this palace beautiful to look at.

Actually, this palace was built for the womenfolk of the royal families, to enjoy the processions and other activities going on the street down, without being seen, as they had to observe a strict ‘purda’ or veil. The windows and balconies are designed in that way. Early morning is the best time to visit this Palace, when it gives the most beautiful of its views in golden sunshine.

Kanak Vrindavan Valley is a rare place in the desserts of Rajasthan. It is located at the foot of Nahargarh Hills on Jaipur-Amber Road. As per the past records, Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh named this beautiful valley as Vrindavan, i.e. the land of Lord Krishna, as it seemed to him so, and he installed the idol of Lord Govind Ji (Lord Krishna) here. This is believed to be a sacred place, where the holy water from many rivers was collected to perform the Ashwamedh Yadnya. The temple is an example of beautiful carvings, lattice and mirror work, and the main ‘Garbha Griha’, i.e. the seat of the Lord, is engraved with exotic ‘panni’ work.
